Amphibian and Reptile Veterinarians
If your herp pet is ill or not behaving normally then please seek the advice of a qualified veterinarian immediately. Many of the Over the Counter (OTC) medications available will not work effectively or can easily be administered incorrectly resulting in a sicker animal. It is best for you and the animal to have it seen by a qualified veterinarian early in the illness so it can be treated appropriately.
When choosing a vet don't be afraid to ask questions. You may want to ask how long they have been practicing with reptiles and amphibians and how many herp patients they are currently seeing. These questions can help you decide how comfortable you feel with them looking at your pet. When you visit the doctor observe how comfortable they are with handling and examining the animal. If they are not comfortable or do something that makes you uncomfortable then you may want to speak to the vet about it or seek another veterinarian.
Listed below are a list of veterinarians that we know see amphibian and reptile pets in their practice. If you notice any errors or know someone who should be on this list and isn't, then please let us know so that the situation can be corrected.
If you are not from the Western New York area you may want to check out Herp Vet Connection or The Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV) to find a vet in your area. Herp Vet Connection offers recommendations from actual patients. ARAV has a member list of veterinarians who are interested in reptiles and amphibians. You can also try contacting your local Herp Society and see who they recommend in your area. If there are no herp vets in your area you could see in an avian vet in the area would be willing to look at your reptile or amphibian for you.
Listed below are the veterinarians in the Western New York area that we have been told see reptiles and amphibians. The clinics listed in italics have been used successfully by WNYHS members in the past. Please report any additions, errors, or corrections to the .
