Smooth Green Snake

(Opheodrys vernalis)

The Smooth Green Snake is 14 - 26 inches in length. They are a bright green in color with a long tail. The belly tends to be white and is often tinged with yellow.

Mating can be seen is spring to late summer. and 3 - 11 eggs are laid. The eggs are elongated and are thin-shelled. The young hatch 4 -23 days later and are 4 - 6 inches in length. Often times females will share a communal nest site.

This diurnal species is usually found in meadows and grassy fields near the forest edge. The grass color of the snake help the camouflage it as it hunts in the grass a shrubs. It feeds mostly on insects and spiders.

Do Not Release Unwanted Pets

Remember that in many places it is illegal to take wildlife out of the wild without the proper permits from local, state, or federal authorities. Please do not release any captive reptiles or amphibians into the wild as this will disrupt the natural order of our environment.
