Redbelly Snake

(Storeria occipitomaculata)

The Red Belly Snake is usually 8 - 16 inches in length. The body is plain brown, gray or black with a single wide light stripe or four or five narrow dark stripes. The belly is red, orange or yellow. Occasionally the belly will be completely black.

This live-bearer mate in Spring or Fall and 1 - 21 young are born in June to September. When born the young are only 3 - 4 inches in length.

The Red Belly Snake can often be found in hilly or mountainous woodlands or sphagnum bogs at elevations of up to 5,600 feet. Then startled or captured they will often curl it's upper lip to expose it's teeth.
