Northern Brown Snake
(Storeria dekay)
The Northern Brown Snake usually measures 10 - 20 inches in length and varies in color. They are often gray, yellowish-brown, brown or even reddish-brown. They have a white stripe down the back bordered by two rows of dark spots. The belly is usually a pale yellow, brown or pink with several dark spots.
This live-bearer usually breeds in the Spring and Fall. In June to September 3 - 31 offspring are born.. The young will measure 3 - 4 inches in length.
The Northern Brown Snake is generally diurnal but will sometimes be active at night during the warmer weather. They can often be found under rocks, leaf litter or other debris. they prefer areas near water or other damp places and feed on earthworms, snails and slugs. When hibernating they can often be found in large groups with other snakes.
Remember that in many places it is illegal to take wildlife out of the wild without the proper permits from local, state, or federal authorities. Please do not release any captive reptiles or amphibians into the wild as this will disrupt the natural order of our environment.
