Italian Wall Lizard

(Podarcis sicula)

The Italian wall lizard measures about six to eight inches in length. They are green in color with a brown or black spotted line that runs down the center of the back to the tail. The underside and jaws is white.

The Italian wall lizard was originally introduced to Long Island from Europe in 1967, They have adapted well to urban conditions and there are some abundant local populations. Italian wall lizards prefer bright sunny areas like open fields bordered by vegetation.

While they are mostly terrestrial, the Italian wall lizard can also sometimes be found climbing. They are a diurnal species and will mate in the spring and early summer months.

Do Not Release Unwanted Pets

Remember that in many places it is illegal to take wildlife out of the wild without the proper permits from local, state, or federal authorities. Please do not release any captive reptiles or amphibians into the wild as this will disrupt the natural order of our environment. See our amphibian and reptile adoptions page for more information on what to do with unwanted herps.
