Wehrle's Salamander
(Plethodon wehrlei)
Wehrle's Salamander is 4.75 - 6 inches in length and has a dark brown or black colored body with irregular spots and stripes that range in color from yellow to bluish-white. The underside is gray with white mottling on the chest and throat.
This salamander breeds in the winter and will deposit her eggs under a rock, a log, or some other inaccessible place. They can usually be found in second-growth forests and will sometimes be found with Northern Slimy Salamander (Plethodon glutinosus) and Northern Redback Salamander (Plethodon c. cinereus). Wehrle's Salamander feeds on small insects and other invertebrates and prefers deep rocky ravines.
